June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day.  This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and the unique heritage , diverse cultures and outstanding contributions for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. 

Strathmore Municipal Library and the SAIL program invite you to learn from 3 amazing speakers on National Indigenous People’s Day.   If you’ve ever needed a boost, wondered how to overcome obstacles or wanted to learn, this event is for you!

After our speakers share their stories there will be time to connect together in a talking circle.

This event is for anyone young or old who wants to set sail into a more dynamic and connected community.

Speakers and Presentations

Astokomii Smith

There are many teachings in Astokomii’s life that she has been taught, the ones that speak to her always is that education is our new buffalo and that there is always more to learn and more to do, especially with each other. Astokomii always keeps these teachings in mind when doing work within the community through professional development, events, and activities for people of all walks of life. Since working for the town in 2018, she has learned many teachings and skills along the journey while over-coming difficult obstacles and she is here to share that journey.

Biography

Astokomii Smith is a proud member of the Siksika Nation and has a tremendous personal and professional investment in educating and learning from others. She is currently the Indigenous Liaison for the Town of Strathmore where she builds bridges between communities and breaks down the barriers between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Astokomii was also the 2019 Calgary Stampede First Nation Princess where she represented Treaty 7, First Nations and Calgary at over 400 events locally, nationally, and internationally. Astokomii is a strong advocate for mental health, during her reign with the Calgary Stampede she chose to raise awareness around mental health – specifically anxiety.

Michael Emery

The Vision and the Mountain: A journey in lifelong learning

Biography

Avid speaker and mountain climber. Is the founder of IAHP. The Institute for the Advancement of Human Potential whose prime mission is to help bridge the gaps in ourselves and between the people in our lives through engaging experiences and workshops providing tools and skills to assist you in your journey. Michael is a passionate advocate for lifelong learning in himself and others. He finds purpose in helping others find theirs. Michael has worked with youth for over 4 decades in everything from provincial sports teams to building life and leadership skills.

Sandra Lamouche

Seeking a Good Life

Based on Cree practice of Pimadisiwin (the good life) and principles which have helped shape and guide Sandra's personal, professional and educational journey. 

Biography

Sandra Lamouche is a nehiyaw (cree) woman, wife and mother. She is an award winning Leader in Indigenous Education and a Champion Women's Hoop Dancer, she is a two-time TEDx Speaker, and a writer.
